One summer morning when I was a kid my step-father looked at the calendar, saw that it was June 10th and slapped his forehead and exclaimed, “I forgot it’s your mother’s birthday!” He sent her roses at work, took us out for a lobster dinner (her favourite) and before the dessert came, gave her a birthday card. Mom fished around in her purse for a second, then handed him one too. “It’s not my birthday,” my step-father said, furrowing his brow. “It’s not mine either,” mom smiled. “It’s July 10th.” Ha ha ha ha. He never forgot her birthday again. And certainly not Mother’s Day. That would be the worst.
Mother’s Day was always breakfast in bed or brunch at the Inn, and a card and something handmade from me. I still like to make my mom things, only now I do it with a little help. A personalized invitation — to brunch, lunch, dinner or a play (my mother would love that!). This is one of my favourites. So thoughtful.
