What to get the hostess with the mostest + A giveaway

My mom is a social butterfly who loves to entertain, whether that’s having a handful of friends over to play Bridge or the entire cast and crew of the latest play she’s stage-managed or produced. There’s always cheese and olives in the fridge and crackers in the cupboard for impromptu guests and extra pillows and blankets if you want to crash on the pull-out couch. (It’ll break your back, but you’re welcome to it.) I stayed with her this weekend when I was in Toronto for a conference and wanted to give her a little something to thank her for having me. What do you give the hostess with the mostest? I knew just the thing! Maybe it’ll be just your thing too.

Lampe Berger had just sent me some of its newest products to try, including the red satin lamp boxed set with its limited edition, holiday-inspired lamp and orange cinnamon fragrance. The spicy, warm scent is perfect for the season, and I’m sure it’ll help make my mom’s guests feel festive from the moment they walk in the door. And maybe more importantly, clear the air of the burning smell in the kitchen. (I said my mom was a great hostess, not a great cook LOL).

What makes Lampe Berger different than your run-of-the-mill air freshener is its patented burner, originally developed over 100 years ago in France (ooh la la!) to help disinfect hospitals. The burner purifies and perfumes the air, destroying the molecules that make undesirable smells and diffusing one of over 50 scents of your choosing, including a fragrance-free so neutral blend to use on its own or dilute another scent.

Also new this fall is a limited-edition trial pack (or trio pack, tomato/tomahto) of three new scents: radiant bergamot (billed as zesty and refreshing), subtle almond (milky and creamy) and wild berries (tangy and intense).

The fragrances are inspired by the scents of South America. Wild berries (the one we tried), is meant to evoke the Amazon rainforest and the açaí and its fruits that grow naturally there. And whoo! It is intense. “[the fragrance] starts with an acidulous and explosive flight with pomegranate, supported by blackcurrant and raspberry. Its voluptuous and liquorice heart with sweet facets and its musk and vanilla base provide softness and sweetness to this unique fragrance.” We let it perfume the air for just a few minutes before putting on the stopper (rather than the 15 or 20 I usually have mine go for) and that was just enough to scent the kitchen and dining room. I prefer lighter, citrusy scents and found wild berries a little spicy for my liking, but my mother is all about drama and enjoyed it very much.

  1. I love coconut because it reminds me of the summertime and always lifts my spirits. However, cinnamon is a nice scent around the holidays.
