Well maybe we’re not so different after all. Last week Netflix released the latest set of hooked episodes (the key episode that kept 70% of viewers watching until the end of the first season) of some of the most popular series and discovered that viewing behaviour (and fandom!) around the world is actually quite universal.
The hooked episode for Canadians was the same as the global hooked episode for a number of series, including The Fall (Ep. 2), Grey’s Anatomy (Ep. 2), Love (Ep. 3), Making a Murderer (Ep. 4), Marvel’s Jessica Jones (Ep. 4) and Narcos (Ep. 3), while Canadians caught onto Girlmore Girls (who else is counting down to the reboot November 25? Can’t wait!!) and The Good Wife just an episode or two earlier.
Regardless of where they live around the world, viewers are not only getting hooked on similar episodes, but identifying with similar storylines. Fear of the unknown in Stranger Things and American Horror Story: Murder House; the underworld of political corruption in Narcos and Marseille; and romantic turns in Gilmore Girls and Grey’s Anatomy had viewers around the globe falling head over heels for each series.
Do you remember the episode that had you hooked? I want to hear about it!
