The Superfun Times Vegan Holiday Cookbook by Isa Chandra Moskowitz + Win a copy!

I know I’m not alone in feeling overwhelmed this time of year, but if it’s your holiday menu you’re worried about, worry no more! I’ve got your back. The Superfun Times Vegan Holiday Cookbook by Isa Chandra Moskowitz is a fantastic resource not only for vegans (and for those with vegan guests coming to the table), but it has plenty of plant-tastic, comforting recipes to satisfy meat-eaters too. It’s Isa’s largest book (she’s published several other vegan bestsellers) and very likely one you’ll turn to the most, both for celebrations year-round and everyday meals.

The recipes are organized by holiday including all the biggies and some American favourites (Super Bowl, Mardi Gras, Fourth of July). I made three recipes from the Christmas chapter, but could have easily swapped them with a number of others that would have been just as seasonally appropriate.

Here’s a taste of what you’ll find inside (all beautifully photographed by Vanessa Rees and Joshua Foo):

Christmas: Bean Bourguignon, Sorta Classic Pot Pie, Figgy Pear Crumble, Gingerbread Waffles

New Year’s: Cinnamon Apple Crepes, Bagels and Nox with Wild Mushroom Caviar, Orange-Pecan Sticky Buns

Super Bowl: Buffalo Cauliflower, Ranch Dressing, Grilled Wedge Salad with Maple-Mustard Dressing and Smoky Pecans

Chinese New Year: Hot and Sour Soup, Mu Shu Pancakes, Tofu Short Ribs with Gingery Mashed Root Vegetables

Valentine’s Day: Sweet Potato Soup with Ginger and Vanilla, Beeting Heart Soup with Champagne Vinaigrette

Mardi Gras: Biscuits and White Pepper Gravy, Andouille and Cannellini Jambalaya, King Cake

Oscars Party: Salted Caramel Corn with Peanuts, Swanky Mushroom Pâté, Edamame-Mint Hummus

St. Patrick’s Day: Avocado Cabbage Rolls, Sausage-Stuffed Leeks, Brined Corned Beet, Irish Cream Whoopie Pies

The bean bourguignon was scrumptious and satisfying, and the gingerbread waffles and gingerbread cookies beyond compare. (No eggs, no milk — no problem! And no nuts either — they are plenty of options for the nut-allergic and gluten intolerant too.)

My guys have been on me to make some icing so they can decorate the cookies but I’ve managed to put them off so far and we’re almost through the batch. (I figure we can do that closer to Christmas or afterwards when they’re off school and we’re wanting something to do.)

Isa tried her best to make the recipes with everyday tools and (mostly) everyday ingredients and serves up plenty of humour along the way. (She’s down to earth and totally one of us!)

“Whenever I see magazine articles promising Tips for Stree-Free Entertaining! I laugh and hope to myself that the article inside is about ordering in, or maybe a party where you’re serving only hummus.” Isa writes. “I hate to break it to you, but it can be stressful to entertain. That’s why right around Thanksgiving you see couples in yoga pants arguing right in front of the red Russian kale at the farmer’s market, completely blocking your access. But stress isn’t a reason not to do things. And to help you along, here are a few tips to make things easier. And also keep in mind: not everything has to be perfect. I like my lasagna a little burnt sometimes. It’s food. Have fun!”

Oooh, entertaining tips too! Yes! And they’re good ones. It’s a wonderful book for gift-giving, and a superfun book to have on hand at home too.

You know what’s next, don’t you?
