I received the June Sweet Reads Box free of charge for review purposes. All opinions are my own and from the heart.
Summer is the season for adventure and June’s Sweet Reads Box celebrates that with a story revolving around one fateful camping trip and a selection of outdoorsy goodies that us indoor cats can still enjoy without putting a foot outside. If you’re new to Sweet Reads Box, it’s a Canadian book subscription box service that comes with a contemporary novel and five or six treats related to the story. I’ve been reviewing them here since they first launched last fall and this month’s box is one of my faves. (And not just because of the cute mug, but that definitely tipped the scale.)
Each box comes with a card with a description of the contents on one side and a quote related to the story on the other. June’s card says “Your life can change in an instant. That instant can last forever.” It’s a quote by Laura Kasischke. (I looked her up. She’s a US poet and novelist known for her books Suspicious River, The Life Before Her Eyes, and White Bird in a Blizzard.)
June’s book is The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore by Kim Fu, a Canadian author who lives in the U.S. Here’s the description:
“Every summer, young girls descend on Camp Forevermore, a sleepaway camp in the Pacific Northwest, where their days are filled with swimming lessons, friendship bracelets, and camp songs by the fire. Bursting with excitement and nervous energy, five of them set off on an overnight kayaking trip to a nearby island. But before the night is over, they find themselves stranded, with no adults to help them survive or guide them home.
The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore traces these five girls—Nita, Kayla, Isabel, Dina, and Siobhan—through and beyond this fateful trip. We see them through successes and failures, loves and heartbreaks of their teen and adult years, and we come to understand how a tragedy can alter the lives it touches in innumerable ways.”
I love everything about the June box, from the novel — which just came out in February and sounds like a fantastic summer read — to all of the extra goodies that tie in so well. I like the design of the mug (‘tho it would be even better if it was a bit larger), the trail mix is delicious and healthy, and the notebook handy to carry around in my purse. And I’ll share the hot chocolate and the pencils with my kids (well maybe not all the pencils — I might steal one of those). Each of the items were wrapped with care and arrived in perfect condition, and I love that more than half of them are Canadian-made. (Did I mention Gourmet du Village is headquartered in Quebec City?)
Sweet Reads Box isn’t cheap, but you get what you pay for: a contemporary novel with a compelling story and a collection of useful treats that are obviously chosen with care to tie in to the book, which make for a pretty special gift. A single box costs $54.99 CAD + shipping, with a 10% discount on three- and six-month subscriptions. And if you use the code SUMMERTIME you’ll save the equivalent of one month’s shipping ($12 CAD) with a three- or six-month subscription.
You’ll find Sweet Reads Box on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. The founders use their channels to share bookish news, live chats with authors, and updates on shipping and box availability (each box sells out very quickly) so if those are of any interest, subscribe to all three so you don’t miss a thing!
